Brush Prairie — Four Hockinson School District students were honored for their essays written in response to assigned readings.

Tanner Hough was named a semifinalist in this spring’s state Letters About Literature competition, while Willow Klug, Lizzie Schneider and Miles Vilkin received honorable mentions.

The contest, which asks students to write to an author and describe how his or her book affected them, is sponsored by the Center for the Book at the Library of Congress and the Washington State Library, a division of the Office of the Secretary of State.

Klug responded to “I am Malala” by Malala Yousafzai, Schneider responded to “The Book Thief” by Markus Zusak, Vilkin responded to “If” by Rudyard Kipling, and Hough responded to “Animal Farm” by George Orwell.
