It’s time to ditch the flannel and break out your favorite shorts, but only for a day or two.
The National Weather Service predicts the sun is coming back on and bringing a 20-degree temperature spike along with it.
The clouds are expected to burn off on Wednesday and bring 80 degree temperatures. Thursday could get as hot as 82 degrees, though there is a slight chance of rain and thunderstorms.
“On Thursday evening, people should just be prepared. They might have to head inside or get into a car,” said Colby Neuman, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service. “Any soccer games, basketball games or practices — people should be prepared to have those postponed.”
A warm front is sitting to the south of the region, but it’s moving north. Today and tonight, it’s pushing a lot of misty rain onto Southwest Washington.
Neuman said it’s not unusual for the region to have springtime temperature swings — just not quite this dramatic.
“Warming up 20 degrees has only happened a handful of times in May,” he said. “In the spring, it’s usually a roller coaster ride — we’ve just been mostly down this spring.”
The year’s pervious high temperature was 71 on April 21. Other than that day, temperatures have struggled to rise past the mid-60s.
Keep the flannel handy, though.
After two days of highs the region’s temperatures will swing low again, and the highs on Friday and Saturday will be around 59 degrees with a chance of showers.
