A former Mountain View High School basketball player is now the head coach at Mountain View.
JC Alexander, who graduated in 2004, has been hired as the boys basketball coach for the Thunder.
“Excited. Nervous. But just eager,” Alexander said. “I’m ready to get started. It was the one job I wanted.”
Alexander took over a struggling program at Parkrose High School in Portland, and the Broncos improved in each of his three seasons. Parkrose finished seventh in state in 2016 and third in state this winter.
“We are thrilled to have Coach Alexander, a proud alum and an accomplished head coach,” said Adam Mathieson, Mountain View’s athletic director. “His passion for the basketball program at MVHS, and the school in general, was very evident throughout the (interviewing) process.”
Alexander said his players at Parkrose bought into the underdog role, then thrived. Alexander said he could see the same thing happening with the Thunder.
“Mountain View has always been a pretty powerful basketball team. The community, the kids, and they school, they are ready to be good again,” Alexander said. “We’ll definitely use the underdog mentality.”
Alexander, who has worked the past eight years in the special education department at Evergreen High School, said taking over at Mountain View is a “dream come true” in his coaching career.
Alexander takes over for Aaron Shepherd, who resigned after four seasons with the Thunder.
