Snow removal ending at winter recreation parking lots

OLYMPIA — Money to plow snow, groom trails and maintain restrooms at winter recreation parking lots in Washington will be gone as of Friday.

The Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission is urging winter recreationists to check with local authorities if planning a trip to parking lots maintained by the sno-park program.

The agency budgeted 20 percent more for snow removal this year, but the state received about double the snowfall.

Pamela McConkey, winter recreation program manager, said the parks agency is not allowed to dip into future years’ funding.

The Gifford Pinchot National Forest reports 36 inches of snow at Cougar and 48 inches at Marble Mountain on the south side of Mount St. Helens. Road No. 83 is clear.

Trails have not been groomed recently in the upper Wind River or Mount Adams areas. Adequate snow coverage exists, but the trails are littered with debris such as as needles, cones and lichen.

Sno-park permits are not required beginning Saturday at the Gifford Pinchot winter recreation areas.
