THE DALLES, Ore. — There will be no spring chinook fishing season in 2017 on Oregon’s Deschutes River.
Rod French, district fish biologist for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, said very poor returns of hatchery and wild spring salmon are forecast this year.
The closure is intended to ensure the hatchery is able to collect enough spawners for production goals.
Hood River will be open for spring chinook from April 15 through June 30.
Open waters will be from the mouth to the confluence with the East Fork Hood and in the West Fork Hood from its mouth upstream to the deadline 200 feet downstream of Punchbowl Falls.
Catch limits will be one adult hatchery spring chinook and five hatchery jack chinook per day. It will be unlawful to continue fishing in the Hood River after retaining an adult chinook.
