Olympia – Beginning Tuesday, Washington State Patrol troopers across the state will be looking for drivers who are following too closely.

Troopers will be on the lookout for drivers breaking the law, which requires vehicles to follow at a distance that is “reasonable and prudent.” The emphasis on tailgating will go through Thursday.

Drivers caught following a vehicle too closely could face a $137 ticket. If a collision is involved, the fine could be $187, troopers said.

Last year, troopers investigated 9,500 collisions caused by drivers who were following too closely and stopped about 24,300 drivers for the violation, the agency reported.

The state patrol reminds drivers that the more distance you allow between vehicles, the more time you have to react.
