A Vancouver man accused in robberies at a hotel and convenience store reportedly told a store clerk he was robbing her because his mother has cancer, according to court records.

Andrew J. Pablo, 25, made a first appearance Thursday in Clark County Superior Court on suspicion of first- and second-degree robbery in the separate cases. The first-degree robbery charge was previously filed against Pablo in the convenience store robbery, in which a firearm was allegedly used, court records show.

At about 5:10 a.m. May 26, a clerk at E-Z Mart, 9511 N.E. 76th St., was robbed at gunpoint by two men shortly after opening the store. The suspects approached the counter, and one of the men, later identified as Pablo, told the clerk to “open the drawer and give us all of the money.” The other man went around the counter, holding a firearm in his hand, but Pablo told him to put the gun away, according to an affidavit of probable cause.

The clerk handed Pablo the money, and as he pocketed it, he told her, “I am sorry, but my mother has cancer.” Both men ran from the store, and as they fled, instructed the clerk not to call police, the affidavit states.

They took about $300. The store owner provided Clark County sheriff’s deputies with surveillance video that captured the robbery, court documents said.

After distributing photos of the suspects to the media, investigators received a tip identifying one of the men as Pablo. The clerk later identified Pablo in a photo lineup, court records state.

While officers investigated the convenience store robbery, Pablo robbed the Comfort Suites at 4714 N.E. 94th Ave., shortly before 2 p.m. May 30, according to a separate probable cause affidavit. A clerk who was setting up a reservation with another customer said Pablo walked into the lobby, jumped over the counter and pushed her against the wall while he took money from the register, the affidavit states.

He was later identified in a photo lineup, the affidavit said.

On Thursday, Pablo’s bail was set at $50,000. He will be arraigned July 6.
