Weather Eye: Enjoy the seasonal highs; lazy days of summer are on way

How did you like the afternoon temperatures Monday that were some 30 degrees cooler than Sunday? Boy, how do you spell relief? MARINE AIR. That was a record-setting high temperature of 101 degrees Sunday and a most remarkable marine push that kept us in the low 70s. It was 72 degrees at 4 p.m. Monday in Vancouver.

No worry, we have no more 100 degree days coming any time soon. In fact, we should enjoy seasonal highs and a little above for the next ten days or so. I do see a weak weather system passing through over us on Monday and the Fourth of July. Of course right?

No doubt summer will return on July 5th and afterward. Meanwhile, we have varying amounts of morning clouds this week and afternoon clear with highs today, and Wednesday in the 70s. Thursday and Friday have less marine air and highs in the low 80s. Can I have a hip, hip, hurray?

Not only did Vancouver set a new daily high temperature record Sunday, but Seattle also had a new daily high of 96 degrees. It was also the warmest June day on record at Sea-Tac. There were other record highs around Western Washington on Sunday as well.

Although I heard a few comments and saw some in print that this past weekend were the dog days of summer, that’s no exactly right. We wait a while for the official run of summer dog days. In Finland, they begin Saturday, July 22 and run through Tuesday, August 22.

In the United States, we see it begin on July 3 and through August 11. It doesn’t have to do with dogs lying around in the heat officially, but comes from ancient Greek beliefs about the Dog Star. The Dog Star rises Monday in the sky and disappears in August.

Of course, we relate to hot, muggy weather with lazy dogs lying under a shade tree while the owner is in a hammock sipping a beverage.

Oh yes, those lazy, hazy days of summer are on the way.
