Two teachers receive statewide awards

Battle Ground – Two Battle Ground Public Schools teachers have received statewide awards.

Beth Doughty, a teacher at Chief Umtuch Middle School, was named Washington’s 2017 History Teacher of the Year by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. Andrea Johnston, an art teacher at Tukes Valley Primary, was named the Washington Art Education Association’s 2017 Elementary Art Educator of the Year.

According to a district news release, Doughty has created interactive units allowing her students to engage with history. She will receive a $1,000 honorarium and is eligible for the national award. Chief Umtuch Middle School will receive a set of American history books and Gilder Lehrman educational materials.

Johnston was recognized for her collaboration with her colleagues and curriculum that takes students’ interests into account. Johnston is also eligible for future nominations for regional and national awards from the National Art Education Association.
