A fire on the deck of an apartment in Vancouver’s Kevanna Park neighborhood Friday morning was quickly extinguished thanks to a maintenance worker.

Someone called 911 just before 9 a.m. Friday to report that flames were climbing a second-story patio at the Green Leaf River Pointe apartments, 3508 N.E. 109th Ave., Vancouver Fire Department spokesman Darrin Deming said.

Prior to firefighters arriving, a maintenance worker used a fire extinguisher on the blaze, stunting the growth of the flames, Deming said. Someone else also knocked on the door of the unit, waking the occupant inside, he said.

Arriving crews pulled a hose line to the unit and mopped up the rest of the fire, Deming said. The fire did not extend into the apartment or the attic, he added, so no one was displaced.

“Thank goodness for the quick response from the maintenance guy and the (person) who woke him up,” Deming said. “They stopped something that could have gone in a very bad direction.”

Investigators with the Vancouver Fire Marshal’s Office are continuing to look into what caused the fire.
