FIRCREST — Lara Alford’s fourth-graders at Fircrest Elementary School created a mural out of recycled plastic caps to draw awareness to the fact that plastic caps and lids are often left on bottles when put in the recycling, which then makes the bottle or container difficult or impossible to recycle. It’s the third year Alford’s class has created a mural using bottle caps. The students chose Equality as this year’s theme, with the mural showing two people holding hands. The mural will be on display at the Clark County Recycled Arts Festival, along with writing the students have done about what the mural means to them. “It’s amazing how easily and naturally students at this age understand the importance of treating all individuals with respect despite their race, religion, abilities, gender, status, sexual orientation or any other characteristic that makes each of us unique individuals,” Alford wrote in an email. “They are baffled that this notion seems to be difficult for so many adults.”
