Weather Eye: Be prepared for fast-moving system today

A fast-moving strong weather system is forecast to move through Clark County today, bringing a quick burst of heavy rain, gusty winds and cooler temperatures. A special weather statement was issued by the National Weather Service in Portland for strong winds along the coast gusting to 50 mph. That is strong for a storm in mid-June. More fall-like, I’d say.

Another weak low will follow Friday for a continuation of light rain and showers. Hopefully these end before daylight Saturday, as we have a nice weather forecast for the weekend, but don’t be surprised if clouds are slow to burn off early Saturday.

I think highs between 80 and 85 are on tap for Father’s Day and Monday. Then down into the 70s next week. Pleasant but not hot. Some forecast models were hinting a heat low from the desert Southwest would migrate northward, bringing hot weather late next week. Others have cold feet with that idea. We’ll take a look Sunday.

Looking back a few weeks to Mother’s Day, we had a few scattered showers and a high of 62 degrees. There were some sun breaks. This go-around for Pops is looking better, with full sunshine and 82 degrees.

Can you believe all we could muster up as of 5 p.m. Wednesday was 64 degrees for a high here in Vancouver? A far cry from the average of 73 degrees. Yep June gloom at its best. The rain today will surely water your garden, as I figure about one-half inch here in the city today and Friday and an inch or more in the foothills of Clark County.

Five years ago in 2012 in this column I was writing this, “Good news! The weekend weather for Father’s Day looks outstanding so get ready to fire up the old barbecue for Sunday’s dinner. We are expecting mostly sunny skies and highs at or close to 80 degrees both days this weekend.”

We will run this delightful repeat and chat on Father’s Day!
