Legacy Salmon Creek Medical Center received a $500,000 donation — the hospital’s largest single donation — that will be used to enhance its current breast health center.

The Legacy Salmon Creek Hospital Foundation, which fundraises for the Vancouver hospital, announced the “transformational pledge” Wednesday afternoon.

“This generous lead gift is pivotal for us to continue to provide cutting-edge cancer services that help our patients, both physically and emotionally,” Bryce Helgerson, president of Legacy Salmon Creek, said in a news release.

The donation was made by Douglas and Heather Greene. Legacy will name the new breast health center after the couple.

“Their significant investment ensures our community will continue to have access to innovative, high-quality cancer care,” Helgerson said.

Douglas Greene is an inventor who has developed numerous products, including the Skytech remote controls for gas fireplaces and the Aqua Smart remote thermostat for electric water heaters. Heather Greene has had an extensive career in business, the arts, film and high fashion, according to the news release.

“Legacy Salmon Creek has always been there with great care for our family,” Douglas Greene said. “We are thrilled to help this exceptional hospital continue to provide the very best of care.”

The donation comes during the first phase of a multiyear campaign to develop a comprehensive cancer center at Legacy Salmon Creek Medical Center.

Last year, gynecologic oncologists joined the Legacy Salmon Creek staff and in March, Legacy Health and Oregon Health & Science University Knight Cancer Institute announced they were teaming up with The Vancouver Clinic to expand their cancer collaborative into Southwest Washington.
