Registration for the 2017 Race for the Cure is officially open.

Susan G. Komen of Oregon and Southwest Washington will host the event Sept. 17 at Tom McCall Waterfront Park in Portland. Early bird registration, with discounted entry cost, opened Thursday and runs through June 30.

The event will feature a 5K fun run, a 5K walk and a 1-mile family walk. And, new this year, the event will take participants on a new route over the Hawthorne and Steel bridges and dogs can register for the race.

To register for the race, visit www.komenoregon.org.

Race for the Cure is the signature Komen event and single largest fundraiser, bringing in more than $850,000. The majority of the money raised (75 percent) is used to support local programs, such as screening, diagnosis and treatment services, safe and accurate breast cancer information, and patient navigation programs. The remaining money will go toward understanding metastasis and how to prevent recurrence and develop more effective treatment.
