Weather Eye: Keep cool; August will roll in with bang, heat wave

Some like it hot and some like it not. So, I guess it is turn for those that like it hot. Triple-digit high temperatures are on their way. It was just last week we were talking about how nice the summer has been and only two days with highs at 90 or better.

Monday will most likely be the third day in the 90-degree range. Today we stay in the 80s for the last time for several days at least. August rolls in on Tuesday with a bang as a hot area of high pressure builds northward over us. We go near 100 Tuesday, 105 Wednesday and maybe break the all-time record high of 107 with 108 degrees on Thursday. Then near 100 on Friday.

The last time we had excessive heat was late July 2009. On July 29, we reached 107 degrees and had three days at or above 100 degrees. The National Weather Service in Portland has issued an excessive heat watch for us from noon Tuesday to 11 p.m. Friday.

They say record highs are likely in the 103 to 108-degree range. Some of you have seen your weather apps on your electronic devices even showing 110 degrees for Vancouver. I think that is overdone. The overnight lows will be unpleasant for sleep generally in the 65 to 75 degrees range.

This will be a high-impact event for folks without air conditioning. Also, power demands will be high and strain power lines. Check on people you know that are elderly or ill and offer help if possible. Homes will not cool off much overnight. Keep pets inside and be nice to birds with a pan of water set outside.

If you have the chance, the coast will be a good retreat as it will be cooler there. We’ll chat on Tuesday and see how things are going. Keep cool!
