Weekend work to allow buses on road shoulder

Drivers should expect possible delays this weekend, as crews will be re-striping state Highway 14 in preparation for a bus-on-shoulder pilot project between C-Tran and the Washington Department of Transportation.

Work this weekend will temporarily reduce both directions of state Highway 14 to a single lane between Interstate 205 and Southeast 164th Avenue nightly from 8 p.m. to 9 a.m. between Friday and Sunday morning. The work is weather-dependent.

This fall, the pilot project will allow buses to use the shoulder on a short stretch of Highway 14 when traffic speeds drop below 35 mph.

After the summer, C-Tran will train their drivers to merge in and out of traffic during congested periods before the project begins. Signs will also be in place to alert drivers of buses on the shoulder.

The $50,000 project is funded by C-Tran and WSDOT.
