Kids melt cheese, pop balloons at science fair

Washougal — Some projects in the fourth annual Hathaway Elementary School Fifth Grade Science Fair ended in failure, which was perfectly fine with Andrew Schlauch, a fifth-grade teacher at the school. “Failure is still learning,” he said in a news release from the school district. “In fact, failure can teach some of the best lessons.” Younger students from the school toured the fair and tried out some of the projects, including a test by Zoe Derico to see which of three cheeses melted most evenly on bread and Gillian Mollendor’s “Big Boom,” which tested if a balloon filled with helium or air would pop into more pieces.
