In its first year in the Northwest Premier League, The Washington Timbers women’s team has reached the semifinals.
Coached by former Portland Thorns defender and Columbia River graduate Kat Tarr, the Timbers beat Yakima United 4-0 Saturday at Harmony Sports Complex in Vancouver.
The Timbers, who placed third in the league, will face the No. 2-seed Spokane Shadow on Sunday at Spokane.
Former Washougal and University of Portland star Ellie Boon and Prairie grad Kaili Brundage scored for the Timbers. Columbia River grad Lili Delgadillo had the shutout in goal.
Battan to represent U.S. at global event — University of Idaho forward Kavita Battan, a Hockinson High graduate, will represent the United States at the 2017 Summer Universiade soccer tournament in Taipei, Taiwan.
The biennial event is an Olympic-style event for college athletes around the world.
Last fall, Battan finished her career as the fourth-highest goal scorer in Idaho program history. She was named first-team all-Big Sky for the second consecutive year.
Little League, Babe Ruth update
Several state baseball and softball tournaments were held last week, many involving local teams. Here’s a rundown of whose seasons are continuing at regional tournaments.
16-U Senior Baseball — Lewis River Little League advanced to regionals with a 9-4 win over South Kitsap Saturday in Port Orchard.
Lewis River swept through the state tournament, outscoring four opponents 58-12.
The nine-team western regional tournament is July 20-26 in Sacramento, Calif. Lewis River opens the double-elimination tournament Friday against Montana.
Babe Ruth 15 year olds — Camas-Washougal defeated KWRL 11-9 Saturday at Louis Bloch Park to win the Southern Washington title. Both teams advance to regionals July 24-29 in Kelso.
Babe Ruth 14 year olds — KWRL won the Southern Washington title with a 7-2 win over Kelso on Sunday in Richland. KWRL advances to the Western regional tournament July 24-28 in Calgary.
Babe Ruth 13 year olds — Southern Washington champ KWRL is headed to the regional tournament July 18-22 in Meridian, Idaho.
Babe Ruth 16-18 year olds — Primetime is the Southwest Washington No. 1 seed and RBI Baseball is the district’s No. 2 seed at the regional tournament Wednesday through Sunday in Calgary.
Sayers, McChesney win Washougal races
Willy Sayers won the 5-mile race and Jesse McChesney won the 3-miler as the Clark County Running Club held a pair of races last week at Cottonwood Beach Park in Washougal.
Sayers, a 37-year-old from Vancouver, covered the five-mile route in 30 minutes, 58 second. McChesney, 29, clocked in at 15:57.
The next weekly Wednesday run will be at 3-mile race at Round Lake Park in Camas. It begins at 7 p.m.
