Drivers of North East Padden Parkway/state Highway 500 should start thinking about different ways to get around later this month.
The Washington State Department of Transportation announced plans to resurface the highway between Northeast 117th Avenue and along Northeast 162nd Avenue to Northeast Fourth Plain Boulevard outside Vancouver.
The official start date hasn’t been announced, but WSDOT officials expect the work to begin in the middle of this month and last until fall.
WSDOT Spokeswoman Tamara Greenwell said this is the first time the roadway has been paved since it was built in 2000.
“There’s no good time to repave a highway, especially a stretch that serves more than 30,000 vehicles a day,” Greenwell said in an email. “We’re encouraging folks to sign up to get email alerts, so we can update them once the weekend closures are scheduled.”
Drivers should plan on using alternate routes on two consecutive weekends once the work begins.
Starting at 8 p.m. on a Friday through 5 a.m. on a Monday, crews will close all lanes in one direction of Padden Parkway between Northeast 117th Avenue and Northeast 162nd Avenue. The following weekend they’ll do the same to the opposite direction.
The pedestrian path on the south side of the road will also close.
