Vancouver officials go after illegal fireworks use

The small, whirling firework flew into the air just as Deputy Vancouver Fire Marshal Cristian Ganea arrived to a cul-de-sac off Northeast 28th Street in the Vancouver’s Image neighborhood.

That small firework, and the paper bag of fireworks Ganea and MetroWatch patrol officer Ryan Wilson seized Sunday night, cost the onlookers $500.

Tolls on I-5, I-205 take step forward

Oregon lawmakers got one step closer to passing a massive transportation package that could bring rush-hour tolls to interstates 5 and 205, among other new taxes and fees to improve the state’s declining infrastructure.

The Oregon Senate on Thursday approved the $5.3 billion transportation bill approved by the Oregon House the day before and sent it to Gov. Kate Brown to be signed into law.

Washington becomes 5th state to guarantee paid family leave

OLYMPIA — Washington is now among just a handful of states that guarantee paid family leave, following Gov. Jay Inslee’s signing Wednesday of a bipartisan plan approved by the Legislature.

The measure offers eligible workers 12 weeks paid time off for the birth or adoption of a child or for the serious medical condition of the worker or the worker’s family member beginning in 2020, or 16 weeks for a combination of both. An additional two weeks may be used if there is a serious health condition with a pregnancy.
