A fire that damaged two mobile homes and left two women displaced in east Orchards on Tuesday was likely caused by improperly discarded smoking materials.

Deborah Holter, 64, reported the blaze at about 3:25 p.m. after she saw flames outside her window at her home at Green Mountain Mobile Ranch at 21209 N.E. 58th Ave. Multiple fire departments responded.

Firefighters were challenged by the day’s heat and the closeness of the two units.

Clark County Deputy Fire Marshal Dan Young said the probable cause (meaning there is more than a 50-percent certainty) was that smoking materials discarded by a contractor who worked on a nearby shed earlier in the day ignited the fire.

He estimated the fire caused $50,000 damage to the two homes.
