Hay ignites barn in Amboy, destroys building

Hay that spontaneously caught fire in a barn Tuesday destroyed the building and damaged about $25,000 in farming equipment.

Assistant Chief Gordon Brooks from Fire District 10 said drying hay at a barn in the 41000 block of N.E. Columbia Tie Road north of Amboy lit and destroyed horse tack, hay, large farm equipment and other sundries in the barn.

“It’s actually relatively common,” Brooks said. “As it dries and cures, it creates a significant amount of heat.”

No one was injured, Brooks said, but the barn was a total loss.

Brooks said the Fourth of July holiday was relatively quiet for the north county district as of the afternoon. Crews responded to smaller medical emergencies and a legal burn in addition to the barn fire.
