Fire damages two mobile homes

A Tuesday afternoon fire damaged two mobile homes and left two women displaced. No one was hurt.

Deborah Holter, 64, reported the blaze at about 3:25 p.m. at 21209 58th Ave., when she saw flames outside her window at her home at Green Mountain Mobile Ranch east of Orchards. Five engines, two water tenders and several other trucks responded, led by the Vancouver Fire Department with support from Fire District 3 and the Camas-Washougal Fire Department.

The fire, which the Vancouver fire marshal is still investigating, damaged Holter’s home and an adjacent mobile home. Holter said she ran to wake up the woman in the other unit, who was napping at the time of the fire. The other woman declined to be interviewed by The Columbian.

“I just bought this house three weeks ago,” Holter said. “I was still unpacking.”

Battalion Chief Hans Wachlin said the day’s heat posed a challenge to firefighters. A relief truck with water and air conditioning was on scene so firefighters could catch breaks. The closeness of the units also made fighting the blaze a challenge.

“We had two before we even arrived, but we kept it to two,” Wachlin said.

Holter will stay with family in the aftermath of the fire. A firefighter was able to gather a laundry basket filled with some of Holter’s more important items — her purse, vital paperwork and medication.

“This is most of the stuff to get me by,” Holter said.

The cause and manner of the fire is not yet available from the fire marshal.
