Vancouver man dies while crossing Interstate 5

A 27-year-old Vancouver man was killed late Saturday after reportedly being struck while crossing the northbound lanes on Interstate 5 near Ridgefield.

The Washington State Patrol responded to a call at 11:54 p.m. on Saturday to a report of a pedestrian struck on the freeway near milepost 14. According to a statement from the state patrol, Aron Awataro was found dead on the scene.

According to the statement, Awataro was struck while walking in the center lane of the northbound lanes under the Pioneer Street overpass by a 2015 GMC Sierra pickup driven by Luis Escobar, 29, of Woodburn. Three other passengers were in the truck with Escobar. None were reported injured in the collision, but the pickup was damaged and towed away.

No alcohol or drugs were involved in the incident, according the state patrol. No arrest was made.
