A small fire that reportedly started in a hedge early Sunday morning spread to a nearby duplex, causing some damage to the structure.

Vancouver firefighters responded to a call of a fire at 7:47 a.m. Sunday at 2472 N.E. 79th Ct., said firefighter Darrin Deming, spokesman for the Vancouver Fire Department.

When firefighters arrived on the scene, Deming said they saw a small column of smoke and found “hedges on fire behind a residence.” Deming said some people from the area were spraying the fire with garden hoses.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze, but Deming said they noticed flames had spread to a nearby two-story duplex, climbing up the siding and appearing to enter the residence on the second story. A crew investigated and entered the attic space, finding some smoldering roof beams and insulation that firefighters extinguished.

Deming said no one was injured but a resident of the duplex was displaced.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time and under investigation.
