Vancouver — Bloodworks Northwest is asking people to roll up their sleeves and donate blood this holiday weekend — and throughout the month of July — to help the organization avoid a summer shortage.

“We’re already at the point where inventories of the most-needed blood types are nearing critical levels — meaning we have only a two- or three-day supply,” said Dr. James AuBuchon, president and CEO of Bloodworks, in a news release.

“To avoid a summer crunch, we’re asking people who haven’t donated recently to celebrate the Fourth by giving blood, or by scheduling an appointment during the next two weeks,” he said in the release.

All Bloodworks donor centers will be open on July 4 for whole blood donations and apheresis collections. That includes the Vancouver center, 9320 NE Vancouver Mall Drive, Suite 100, which is open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. To schedule an appointment, visit schedule.bloodworksnw.org or call 800-398-7888.

Bloodworks will also hold a blood drive 12:30 to 6:30 p.m. Friday at Whole Foods Market, 815 S.E. 160th Ave., in Vancouver. Everyone who registers for that blood drive will receive a free 12-ounce bag of Caffe Vita coffee. To register, visit www.bloodworksnw.org/about/news/wfm.
