Weather Eye: Best to stay inside today with ice expected to hamper travel

Well, what can I say? Another blast of icy precipitation reached Clark County on Saturday with on-again, off-again snow showers. The snow was so powdery, much of it was blowing off roadways. The bulk of the moisture, once again, remained to our south with Salem and Eugene leading the way with 3 to 5 inches.

Late Saturday afternoon, there was freezing rain in Eugene and sleet in Salem, indicating that the warmer air aloft nosed its way toward us.

Another low-pressure system swings inland today, and the bulk of the predicted ice storm will be today with maybe one-half inch of icing. That would make being outdoors in a car or on foot extremely dangerous, so stay inside.

We still have that huge low that dropped down from the Yukon, as we discussed Thursday, spinning west of the Oregon Coast. That giant low is merging moisture from the southern jet stream off California and spinning bands of moisture northeastward.

We will “warm” up above freezing some time tonight, but much of the ice and snow will still be on the ground Monday morning. Another snow day? Maybe.

Things should calm down Monday and early Tuesday, but another low swings up from the southwest and could pull more cold air through the Gorge — and we may be facing another round of snow/ice later Tuesday into Wednesday. We’ll see how that develops.

Maybe just a cold rain here locally or back to winter precipitation. So as always, stay tuned.

This winter so far is somewhat reminiscent of my younger days, when we had many periods of cold and snow each winter.

Times a-changing?
