Weather Eye: February temperatures below normal, rainfall above average

Thank goodness we had a break in the weather action Saturday. The storm that brought snow to the coast Friday and left Vancouver unscathed is well into California.

Another low pressure system was forecast to bring us chilly rain today and snow in the foothills and above. As the new week progresses, the snow level gradually climbs up to above the mountain passes. The ski areas will have lots of fresh powder though the week.

It appears that March will come in as a lamb this Wednesday with no weather events. How about that? Spring officially arrives on March 1 for us weather and climate folks. Doesn’t that have a nice sound to it, spring? Especially after snow, potholes, ice, rain and more potholes?

February has followed suit after December and January with temperatures averaging below normal. The average mean temperature so far is 41 degrees, 2.4 degrees below average. Rainfall is incredible at 10.02 inches, 6.61 inches above average. February will go in the record books as a cold, wet month.

It looks like highs this week will run below the average of 53 degrees. Realize the average high and low this week is 53 and 36. No problem getting the 36 or colder but that 53 degrees will be a challenge. Usually we get a few days in February in the 60s. Not so this year.

Perhaps we find solace that a new month will bring us less winter and more spring. At least we will enjoy a longer hour of daylight beginning March 12. I will mention that despite all the gloomy weather of late, our mountain snow packs are running a little below average so we could use more snow up there.

Enjoy your new week. We will chat on Tuesday.
