Washougal — Hathaway Elementary School fifth-graders in Andrew Schlauch’s class spent Valentine’s Day learning engineering concepts.

Students designed Valentine’s Day boxes using cardboard boxes, tubes, string, tape and water bottles. Students used the boxes to deliver cards and candy to loved ones.

They used pulleys, wedges, screws, levers, wheels and ramps to bring their designs to life. The boxes had to incorporate two simple machines and be compact and sturdy enough to make it home after school.

“The students are challenged to be creative thinkers in this project,” Schlauch said. “Just like an engineer, they are faced with certain problems during construction and need to find ways to solve it.”
