Washougal — In a new competition, Washougal High School culinary students battled in a Food Truck Face Off on Feb. 9 and 10 in the school’s kitchen classroom.

Culinary arts instructor Brenda Hitchins was inspired by the popularity of food trucks in the area and created the event to let students apply skills learned throughout the semester.

Student teams created their own menus, pricing and food truck d?cor to try and get customers to purchase their food. The students with the most revenue at their “truck” — they positioned tables in a truck-like space and colored a truck as they would decorate an actual vehicle — won the competition.

Students and high school faculty and staff served as the guests, walking among the competing trucks to decide what food to order with their $6 of play money.

“I really wanted students to experience how to collaborate, work as a team, communicate and plan to pull everything together on this,” Hitchins said. “They were able to see first-hand why planning is so important and what all is entailed in implementing a multifaceted project. Good planning is a life skill used in business and in everyday life.”
