Weather Eye: And you thought we were done with snow references

In this wet February, wintry mix remains possible for some

We discussed here the other day that there was a hint of winter weather in the air later this week. Looking at weather charts Monday while writing this, it appears to still be on track. Beginning Wednesday, colder air aloft will be filtering in, lowering the snow levels.

By Thursday or Friday, snow showers will fall in the foothills around Clark County, and if a rain shower is heavy enough, many could see snowflakes mixing in. At this point, there is no real snowstorm in the offing, but of course things could change as the colder air lingers through the weekend and into early next week. The main storm track will remain to our south.

California will get rain and more rain. It’s difficult to look at news reports and pictures of the flooding down there. Way too much water and nowhere to go in the flatlands and farmlands. Lots of damage everywhere from the repeated pounding of storms.

We have had our share of rain locally as well. As of noon Monday, Vancouver had 9.40 inches in the ol’ rain bucket. That is way over twice what we would expect for the entire month of February. Many Northwest cities will set new records for sure. Besides Vancouver, Portland and Seattle have had their second-wettest Februarys already. With a week left to go, I’m sure new records will be in the books although precipitation drops off.

Temperatures are running cooler than normal, too. The average mean temperature for Vancouver is 41.1 degrees, 2 degrees below average. How did we do last year? Much better with seven days with high temperatures at or above 60 degrees. Rainfall was below average with 3.81 inches. Average is 4.03 inches

The only choice outside of a quick trip to a tropical beach is to weather the chilly conditions the rest of the month. Hopefully, March will shower some pleasure upon us. March may come in like a lion or maybe a snow leopard? Stay tuned.
