Christmas was interrupted for a Washougal family after a house fire left the back of their home severely damaged.

At about 5:40 a.m. Monday, Camas-Washougal Fire responded to a house fire at 4238 Y St., which was apparently started after the family tried to have a fire in their outdoor fire pit Sunday night, Battalion Chief Larry Larimer said.

It appeared burning material had become trapped under the deck when the owner tried lighting the fire, Larimer said, noting that the fire was “well constructed and far enough from the house.”

The blaze — which firefighters spent more than three hours tending to, according to dispatch logs –burned the back deck and spread into the family’s attic. Larimer, however, said most of the family’s belongings stayed intact and no one was injured.

“It’s certainly not an ideal location if you’re going to have an event like that, but it went as well as expected,” Larimer said.
