Battle Ground Girls Basketball: Coach hopes change in offense leads to turning point in her third season

Lisa May’s ah-ha moment came in June.

The offense her Battle Ground Tigers ran for two seasons became so repetitive, players stopped looking for shots. Pass, cut, fill … forget to shoot.

“The routine put them to sleep, in my opinion,” May said.

Time for a tune-up.

As the new-look offense goes, so goes the motto for the Battle Ground girls of “Make something happen” in May’s third season as head coach. The pivotal Year 3, May believes, is a turning point in the program’s direction.

That, and compete again.

“The offense we operated,” she said, “I feel like we were working hard, but not competing.”

May said she hopes the senior class is the best to come through the program in her short tenure. It’s headlined by four-year varsity player Morgan Stradley, the Tigers’ returning leading scorer and a player who easily fits the bill of the Tigers’ team motto of trying to make things happen.

Stradley is a “beast” as May described, a natural wing, but can play all five positions, if need be. May hopes the load she’s carried by herself won’t be the case her senior season.

“This year,” she said, “we’re hoping we set it up so it’s not all on her shoulders.”
