Carol and John Shields were among those who carried wreaths to place on military graves at Evergreen Memorial Gardens on Saturday as part of Wreaths Across America. Wreaths Across America began in 1992, when a wreath company in Maine decided to donate surplus holiday wreaths to Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia.

Garth Edwards of the Portland Police Highland Guard led a group that placed more than 600 wreaths on graves at Evergreen Memorial Gardens Cemetery on Saturday.
