Weather Eye: Heat to return of long Labor Day weekend

We missed possibly reaching 100 degrees Monday due to all the smoke in the skies. It was stifling to say the least. Still, the high as of 5 p.m. was 96 degrees, well above the average high for the date of 80 degrees.

The good news is we enter a cooling trend today through Thursday. The bad news is we heat up again for the long Labor Day weekend — into the 90s. At least that was the plan looking at guidance Monday.

Our weather is nothing compared to the devastation in Texas from then-Hurricane Harvey. The rain just keeps on coming, it seems. It was predicted that some areas would receive 50 inches of rain before it is over. That is way more rain that falls all year here in Vancouver by a good 10 inches.

If we did receive copious amounts of rain at least our cities have some elevation and most would run off into the Columbia River. Some neighborhoods would for sure be underwater and areas by the numerous small creeks in Clark County would be flooded. The relatively flat terrain and proximity to the coast in Texas there adds to the difficulties. Our thoughts and prayers are with those involved in this terrible weather event.

The wildfires burning out of control around the Northwest could sure use some of that rain, indeed any rain. Looking a head there appears to be no rain heading our way. September begins on a warm and dry note. Maybe the second week of September will bring some showers, as some extended models hint, but that is a ways out there.

Two years ago today, a rare August windstorm hit the ocean beaches with winds gusting up to 80 mph. It was more like an October or November storm. Peak winds here in Vancouver were 36 mph, Astoria, Ore., 62 mph and 70 to 80 mph along the Washington coastal headlands. Over a half-inch of rain fell here and 1-2 inches along the coast. Unusual indeed.

Enjoy the last few days of summer and we will chat on Thursday!
