A weekend fire at a Woodland storage unit was caused by 5 to 10 pounds of gun powder that had degraded and spontaneously heated, fire officials said.

Crews were called to U-Store Self Storage, 620 Mitchell Ave. in Woodland at about 11:20 a.m. Saturday. Responding crews found one storage until completely on fire and heard the ammunition exploding inside, Clark County Fire & Rescue division chief Tim Dawdy said.

The fire damaged one unit, but smoke caused damage throughout the structure, Clark County Deputy Fire Marshal Dan Young said.

Damage to the building was an estimated $40,000, and damage to the structure’s contents was an estimated $50,000, Young said.
