A 15-year-old girl unexpectedly spent the night Monday on Mount St. Helens after she became separated from her hiking group and went missing.

Katrina Osborne, who lives in the Longview/Kelso area, was hiking with her family and friends Monday morning when she became separated from the group, Skamania County Sheriff’s Office said.

Search efforts began later that day, and search coordinators were informed that some campers had spotted the girl late Monday afternoon, the sheriff’s office said. However, when search teams went to the location of the sighting, they were not able to find her.

The search ended Monday unsuccessfully, but search efforts continued early Tuesday morning.

Searchers from the air and the ground, including two dog teams, began looking for Osborne, and the sheriff’s office reported they’d found her just before 8 a.m.

She was located near the Smith Creek Trailhead and was reportedly in good condition.
