Construction work was blamed for a broken water main in Hazel Dell that threatened nearby residences and forced a road closure during repairs.

The break was reported shortly after 1:45 p.m. Fire District 6 spokesman David Schmitke said firefighters arrived at Northeast 14th Avenue and Northeast 68th Street to find a “creek” of water flowing down 68th Street.

A contractor crew with Clark County PUD was replacing a power pole that had previously been hit by a car. While digging a new hole, the auger hit a 12-inch water line, he said.

Fire District 6 Battalion Chief Todd Iremonger said it took about 15 to 20 minutes to stop the water, but a few homes were affected by flooding. One home got water in its basement, he said, and some others saw water soaking their backyard.

Most of the damage appeared to be cosmetic, he said, and while the Red Cross was called to assist homeowners, he didn’t know the full extent or if anyone was displaced.

Clark County PUD spokeswoman Erica Erland said the pipe was heavily damaged and would take several hours to fix.

The work blocked 14th Avenue between 66th and 68th streets, and traffic on 68th street was limited to local-only traffic.
