In its latest round of radon testing, Evergreen Public Schools found elevated radon levels at one of eight campuses.
At Pacific Middle School, test results showed radon levels of 4.0 picocuries per liter of air in a technology education room. The Environmental Protection Agency says extended exposure to levels of 4.0 picocuries or more can be dangerous.
Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States.
Tests at Burton Elementary School, Illahee Elementary School, Shahala Middle School, Cascade Middle School, Endeavour Elementary School, Harmony Elementary School, Legacy High School and Evergreen High School did not show elevated levels of the odorless, colorless radioactive gas.
