A Woodland man convicted of beating a man with a gun he snatched from him was sentenced Friday to serve about 4 1/2 years in prison.
Timothy R. Surrena, 39, pleaded guilty in Clark County Superior Court to first-degree robbery on March 31.
Carl Flintoff called 911 at about 3 a.m. Oct. 15, 2016, after finding a man under the balcony of his home in the 4400 block of Northwest Hayes Road just outside of Woodland, according to court records.
Flintoff grabbed his shotgun and went outside to confront the man, later identified as Surrena, and tell him to leave, according to court documents.
Surrena grabbed the shotgun by the butt and struck Flintoff with it several times, leaving cuts on Flintoff’s forearm, according to court documents. Flintoff was still on the ground when Surrena left and fired off shots as he walked away with the gun, court records said.
In Friday’s hearing, Surrena’s attorney Chris Ramsay said that the incident is out of the norm for Surrena and was under the influence of alcohol.
“He went to cool off in the woods and wound up in Mr. Flintoff’s property,” Ramsay said. “This incident is such an isolated thing … his intent was never to get into this situation.”
Surrena apologized for what happened and said that had he not been drinking, it wouldn’t have happened.
“I understand the severity of this incident; I understand the seriousness of my actions,” he said.
Surrena added that he’s realized he has an alcohol addiction and will take advantage of any treatment the state has to offer.
