Vancouver – Evergreen Public Schools reported slightly elevated radon levels at four campuses, according to the district’s website.

In the process of ongoing testing at all its campuses, Evergreen found radon levels between 4.2 and 6 picocuries per liter of air at Mountain View High School, 4.1 picocuries at Hearthwood Elementary School, 4.3 picocuries at Fircrest Elementary School and between 4 and 4.1 picocuries at Ellsworth Elementary School.

The Environmental Protection Agency has said long-term exposure to radon at levels at or above 4.0 picocuries per liter are unsafe.

The district has contracted with Portland-based mitigation firm Cascade Radon to test and reduce the presence of radon, a naturally occurring gas that is the second leading cause of lung cancer, at campuses found to have elevated levels.
