A fire that tore through a shop northwest of Battle Ground on Wednesday did about a quarter-million dollars damage, according to investigators.

Firefighters responded Wednesday afternoon to a fire in a pole barn structure, at 8105 N.E. 289th St., and encountered flames around 40 feet high.

The fire destroyed the building, and did about $250,000 in damage to the structure and its contents, Deputy Clark County Fire Marshal Dan Young said.

The fire was an accident, he said: It started when sparks from welding caught combustible material, then waste oil, on fire.

The shop housed tools for the residents’ family excavating business, and other items.

No one was hurt, but the fire claimed a truck, quads, chain saws, propane tanks and a barbecue, among other items.
