Clark athletes turn in big weekend of results

It was a big weekend for Clark College athletics with soccer and volleyball squads going 4-0 with three of those events on the road.

Clark cross country runners were among the stars of the NWAC Preview meet at St. Martin’s University in Lacey.

Here’s a recap:

Soccer

WOMEN: at Clark 2, Clackamas 0 — The Penguins improved to 8-0-2 overall and 5-0-0 in the NWAC South division with the victory Saturday at Kim Christiansen Field.

Elllie Quercia had a goal and an assist, Molly Joyce had a goal, and Columbia River grad Emily Heaton had an assist for Clark.

Joyce has 13 goals this season, second most in the NWAC.

Goalkeeper Sarah Kaufman, a Ridgefield High grad, made three saves for her fifth shutout of the season.

MEN: Clark 2, at Lane 0 — Kento Oudomphong and David Joyce scored the goals for the Penguins, and Miguel Martin had two saves to preserve the shutout.

Clark improved to 3-0-2 in the South division, and 3-1-5 overall.

Volleyball

Clark 3, at Southwestern Oregon 0 — The Penguins completed a weekend road sweep with a 25-19, 25-17, 25-23 win Saturday at Coos Bay, Ore.

Livia Strandberg had 11 kills and 10 digs, and Prairie High grad Gauleighyan Eastman had 17 assists.

Clark 3, at Umpqua 0 — On Friday, the Penguins posted a 25-19, 25-20, 25-12 win at Roseburg, Ore., to open South division play. Strandberg had 12 kills and 11 digs, Courtney Misner had 15 digs, and Kendra Padden had 11 digs.

The Penguins are 14-7 overall.

Cross country

NWAC Preview/Saint Martin’s Invitational — Sam Garvin, a Mountain View High grad, won the 8K race with a time of 26 minutes, 0.4 seconds. He finished 1.3 seconds in front of second-place finisher Michael Martin of Lane.

Clark was sixth out of 13 teams with 138 points. Lane won with 67.

Dan Nehnevaj, a Columbia River grad, was 21st overall in 27:07.6 and was scored as 19th.

In the women’s race, Clark’s Cassie McKinney, a Union High grad, was the top NWAC finisher with an 11th-place result on the 5K course. Her time was 19:16.20.

The race was won by Saint Martin’s Shannon Porter, a Hockinson High grad, in 17:50.10.
