Weather Eye: It’s possible we have seen the last of 80 degrees for the year

How about that rain we had over the weekend? The foothills in Clark County had more than 2 inches of rain, almost 3 in some locations. At the Washington Coast, amounts were only a quarter to a third of that due to a good orographic pattern.

Normally, the coast gets the brunt of the moisture, but with this southwesterly flow, the moisture increased with altitude. That’s good because the rainfall increased stream flows quite a bit and reduced or basically ended the wildfire season in the hills.

We will stay rather cool this week, and any showers should remain over the mountains. If we get clearing, the usual fall pattern of night and morning fog will set up.

The next chance of rain appears to be Friday and Saturday. Amounts are uncertain; maybe it will dry up before sliding over us, but by then, it will be officially fall so who knows.

Rainfall for the month stands at 1.11 inches. That puts us about 0.40 inch above average. The average mean temperature is 3 three degrees below normal, so a cool month may go in the record books. I do not see any hot weather in the offing. Any 80 degrees days left this year? Maybe not, unless we get a warm air mass overhead and an offshore flow, which is still possible.

The full harvest moon was beautiful Friday, as you may have seen if you had a break in the clouds.

We are now losing more than three minutes a day of daylight. It’s funny to see it dark at 8 p.m. Inside activities are on the slate, and maybe during the daylight hours as well once we get into the rainy season.
