Because of an increase in call volumes to dispatchers, 911 callers in Clark County may now hear a recorded message asking them to stay on the line.

The Clark Regional Emergency Services Agency has added the automated message for calls that ring for more than 10 seconds to ensure that emergency calls are answered as soon as possible.

“Callers will typically hang up between 8-14 seconds of ring time,” CRESA Operations Manager Kris Devore said in a press release. “That hang up requires a call taker to dial the number back and wait for an answer on the line, thus increasing workload, leading to longer ring times and more abandoned calls.”

Those making an emergency call in Clark County will receive the fastest response possible by waiting on the line, the agency said.

When they speak to a dispatcher, callers are asked to state their emergency and know their location so that dispatchers can direct the correct response.

The agency also reminds residents that nonemergency calls can be made to 311 or 360-693-3111.
