The Ridgefield Police Department has a new permanent chief. John Brooks will take charge of the department starting Oct. 3, replacing Garry Lucas, interim chief since May 20.

Lucas, formerly Clark County’s sheriff, was named interim chief after Carrie Greene retired.

“My first priority will be to meet and establish relationships with the citizens of Ridgefield, local businesses, neighborhood groups, the men and women delivering service, and other area leaders with a desire for a safe community and a government leadership worthy of trust,” Brooks said in a release from the city.

Brooks was a captain with the Portland Police Bureau, where he worked for 25 years. He earned a degree from Washington State University and graduated from the FBI National Academy. He has been a Clark County resident for 15 years.

According to the city’s release, a reception will be held sometime in October for citizens to meet Brooks. City Manager Steve Stuart said Brooks is the right choice for the city.

“He has a solid law enforcement background, a high-energy engaged and collaborative leadership style and the vision to plan for the future needs of our growing city while maintaining high levels of service,” Stuart said in the release.
