In case you missed them, here are some of the top stories of the weekend:
The Evergreen Public Schools’ teachers union on Tuesday overwhelmingly approved a three-year, $42.8 million contract. Students return to school this morning.
The union, the Evergreen Education Association, ratified its contract by a vote of 1,199 to 9 in a packed Clark County Events Center at the Fairgrounds, ending 14 months of negotiation between the district and the union. A state-appointed mediator has been helping in negotiations since March.
As soon as he read that Snoop Dogg was making an appearance in Vancouver, Portland resident Derek Palmer bought the ticket, then he set to work on a gift for the hip hop icon.
“I hope he likes it,” Palmer said, holding a framed black and white spray painted stenciled portrait of the star while standing in line outside Mary Jane’s House of Grass on Wednesday afternoon, waiting for Snoop Dogg to pull up and walk the red carpet into the store.
Former Clark County Superior Court Judge John Wulle has pleaded not guilty to a charge of drunken driving.
Wulle, 65, entered his plea Wednesday morning in Clark County District Court after being arrested Sunday afternoon at a Safeway supermarket in Salmon Creek. He allegedly drove drunk to the store and struck two vehicles.
District Court Judge Kelli Osler previously found probable cause for the DUI charge, a gross misdemeanor, court records show.
After working at Starbucks for a decade pouring drinks heavily laden with sugar, Ryan Thompson began to see a culture clash. He noticed people were starting to trend toward more healthful food choices but the coffee industry wasn’t keeping up.
So the 28-year-old, who expects to graduate this fall with a bachelor’s in marketing from Western Governors University, started Pines Coffee with former business partner JJ Goldsbury. The small drive-through or walk-up coffee hut at 1000 Grand Blvd., is 3 years old and, Thompson said, business is growing rapidly.
With development underway at a Vancouver shopping center anchored by Trader Joe’s, one of Clark County’s busiest intersections may get even busier.
A nearly 8,000-square-foot building is under construction at the shopping center at 305 S.E. Chkalov Drive where Chkalov and Southeast Mill Plain Boulevard intersect. Property manager Mike Thrift said the building should be finished in October and the tenants moved in by the new year. The building will have four spaces, with the units at either end occupied by two fast-casual restaurants: MOD Pizza, a Bellevue-based pizza chain, and Eugene, Ore.-based Cafe Yumm, which focuses on healthy bean and rice bowls. Cafe Yumm will face Chkalov and have a drive-thru.
