Weather Eye: Enjoy fall-like weather over the upcoming holiday weekend

Welcome to the first day of the autumn season from the weather and climate folks! I know, I know, the calendar says autumn begins on Thursday, Sept. 22 at 7:31 a.m. PDT.

Why wait?

Climb aboard and enjoy some fall-like weather now.

We will have a cool flow of air from the west/northwest for the next ten days or so with no hot weather and temperatures likely averaging below normal. One weather system went through yesterday and brought some drizzle and light rain locally. In the coastal mountains and along the Washington coast, rainfall amounts varied but Ocean Park on the Long Beach Peninsula had one-third of an inch of rain as of 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Another stronger system rolls in later tonight and Friday and this could bring a decent soaking almost everywhere with one-fourth to one-half inch of rain. Some folks will be elated and others maybe not.

The weather will indeed act the part of autumn for a short while. I think part or most of the long holiday weekend will be nice.

It is difficult to pinpoint the timing on disturbances as they develop and spin inland off the coast. I guess sharpening my dart tips didn’t help me any.

I wanted to share what I was saying on the last day of August over the past few years on my Facebook page. In 2010, “The rains have begun. Gotta admit a very nice summer while reflecting about the past couple months with the fresh rain puddles.” In 2009, “Last day of summer for this weatherman. September 1st autumn begins. Weekend looks like fall for sure — wet.”

In 2011, “After this weekend all I can say is farewell to summer as us weather and climate folks are now into the fall season weather wise. We are usually a few weeks ahead of the calendar but September, October and November are bundled into the autumn time frame.”
