A dog was killed in a fire that heavily damaged an outbuilding about 10 miles north of Camas early Monday morning.
Crews from East County Fire & Rescue were called to the blaze at 9302 N.E. Winters Road at 2:20 a.m. Monday.
When they arrived, the building and a nearby pickup, car and minivan all were engulfed in flames, ECF&R Deputy Chief Mike Carnes said.
He described the building, about 200 feet away from the main house, as a travel trailer with a porch added onto it that the homeowner used as a shop.
Firefighters brought the flames under control in about 10 minutes, Carnes said. Crews from the Camas-Washougal Fire Department and Vancouver Fire Department assisted at the scene.
Crews remained on scene throughout the morning putting out hot spots, Carnes said. They eventually recovered the body of the homeowner’s dog.
Clark County Deputy Fire Marshal Dan Young said it was unclear what caused the fire, but it was likely a bad heater or electrical problem of some kind. He estimated that the fire caused about $30,000 in damage.
