Preliminary results from a necropsy performed on the dog found dead and skinned in the Salmon Creek area earlier this month show the dog was killed by another animal, according to the Clark County Sheriff’s Office, but who skinned it or how is unclear.

The dog’s owners found the carcass of Mr. Magoo, their 7-year-old Lhasa apso, the morning of Oct. 9 at the edge of their property on Northwest 31st Court. The dog still had fur on its head and legs but was skinned to the muscle.

Despite how it appeared at first glance to the dog’s owners and investigators, the dog did not die at the hands of a human, according to the sheriff’s office. However, the necropsy found the dog’s skin was removed with a “sharp implement” at some point following its death.

That coyotes killed Mr. Magoo would be consistent with information a witness provided to investigators that said two coyotes had been seen on and around the property, the sheriff’s office said.

The sheriff’s office said there was no witness information or other evidence that would explain how the dog’s skin was removed, or what did it.

Since the dog was killed by another animal, there is no crime of animal cruelty to investigate, the sheriff’s office said, so it is suspending its investigation.
